What are the ways to tell if my seed is good and what can I do to maximize its germinating potential?

Seed Revival & Viability Testing Guide (Cannabis)

STEP 1: Float Test (Basic Viability Check)
✅ What It Does:
Checks seed density — viable seeds usually sink. Instructions:
Fill a shot glass or cup with clean, room-temperature water. Drop the seeds in. Wait 2–12 hours.
If the seed; Sinks: It is usually viable
Floats: May be weak or dead
Eventually sinks: Possible slow starter

❗ Don’t leave seeds in water beyond 24 hours unless you're starting germination.

STEP 2: Seed Cleaning (Optional for Old Seeds) Purpose:
Removes mold spores or pathogens before soaking. Soak in:
3% hydrogen peroxide diluted 1:1 with water Soak for 15 minutes, then rinse with distilled water

✂️ STEP 3: Scarification (If Shell is Too Tough) Purpose:
Helps older seeds or those with thick shells to absorb water. Methods:
Sandpaper Method: Gently roll seeds between 2 pieces of fine sandpaper or an emery board. Scuff only until the shine dulls.
Nick the Seam: Use a sharp needle or razor to make a tiny nick on the seam of the seed (advanced and risky — do only if necessary).
Don’t break through the shell completely. You want abrasion, not damage.

⚗️ STEP 4: Gibberellic Acid Soak (For Truly Old or Dormant Seeds) What is it?
Gibberellic acid (GA₃) is a natural plant hormone that breaks dormancy and triggers germination — especially useful for seeds 2+ years old.
How to Prepare:
GA₃ Concentration: 250–500 ppm (parts per million) is ideal Dissolve in distilled water — a tiny amount goes far Example: 100 mg of GA₃ powder in 200 ml of water = 500 ppm Soak seeds for 12–24 hours (no longer)
Where to Get It:
Available online as powder (search “GA3 plant hormone” or from hydroponic suppliers) Store in fridge, lasts long when dry

STEP 5: Germination (Post-Soak)
After any of the above, use your preferred method: Paper Towel Method:
Place seeds between damp, non-bleached paper towels Put inside a ziplock bag or Tupperware Keep warm: 70–78°F (21–25°C) — dark, stable environment Check daily for taproot

Tips for Tough Cases:
Use kelp extract or fulvic acid in germination water (gentle natural hormones) Low heat mat can boost stubborn seed activity Add a few drops of hydrogen peroxide (0.5%) to discourage rot ☠️ When a Seed is Truly Dead: Crumbles under light pressure Still floats after soaking and scuffing Shows rot or mold even after peroxide rinse

✅ Final Summary Method When to Use Float Test Quick viability check Scarification Thick shells or older seeds GA₃ Soak Old, dormant, or rare genetics Hydrogen Peroxide Disinfecting before germination Paper Towel Safe and visible germination environment
